Artists Statement:
My work is about life, growth and the most powerful organic force on the earth,nature.
A celebration for all that grows.Spencer and his forge are situated in the idyllic location
of Harberton,deep in the south hams in Devon.
This is where I bring my creations to life.Having a passion for wild and organic forms
which surround me here.I hot forge metals such as steel,iron,brass and copper often combining hard wood and glass into designs.
As an artist I strive to produce work which is both innovative and contemporary,using
traditional forging techniques and taking them into the future.Techniques and forms
are things I find constantly evolving with the fire and imagination.
Hi Ive always been a bit of a magpie when it comes to metal loved collecting metal objects and smashing up bits of metal when i was a child.My first proper job was in engineering making bullets etc didnt do it long realizing what the things we made did.Got into music hanging on beaches making sculpture with afriend lee gathering things and making creatures that came from the sea and watching the sea destroy our creations we loved it.Whilst working for a theatre company in tavistock we needed some metal rings for a theatre set me and a friend visited a blacksmith at brentor this experience changed my life forever,inspired by a man who was at such peace with the fire.
